Old West Music

This CD is sold by the Library of Congress. The traditional Mormon songs on this CD go back in time to the very earliest days of settlement and pioneering and are, for the opening of Utah and the West, extraordinarily unique documents. Songs of this nature, dealing with early pioneering and settlement, are virtually non-existent for any other state in the Union. Songs and ballads of the West reflect many aspects of Western life, ranging from peaceful pursuits to outlaw life and frontier Indian warfare. This CD serves as a solid introduction to the authentically traditional songs of the area once commonly known as the Far West. The 13 tracks on this CD include:
1. On the Road to California, or The Buffalo Bull Fight (William T. Morris )
2. The Handcart Song ( L.M. Hilton )
3. Tittery-Irie-Aye ( Joseph H. Watkins )
4. Echo Canyon ( L.M. Hilton )
5. The Utah Iron Horse ( Joseph H. Watkins )
6. St. George ( Rudger McArthur )
7. Root Hog or Die ( Jimmy Denoon )
8. Starving to Death on a Government Claim ( Vance Randolph )
9. Joe Bowers ( Charles Ingenthron )
10. Custer's Last Charge ( Warde H. Ford )
11. Sam Bass ( Lannis F. Sutton )
12. The Brazos River ( Mrs. Irene Carlisle )
13. Freighting from Wilcox to Globe ( Abraham John Busby )

I haven't heard this CD so I can't tell you what quality it is. This is an intended purchase, not an actual one. It can be bought here.

The Illustrated History of the Church

This book and companion CDs (sold separately) are well worth it. They contain a broad sweep of Church History from its beginnings to its current day prophet, Thomas S. Monson. There are many pictures and interesting stories. There is a timeline in the front and book covers. This is a great book to have on your coffee table or to have around the house when the grandkids come over. It's approximately 600 pages. The book contains the same material as the CDs do, with minor variations. I like to have both so I can read it at home and see the interesting and colorful pictures, or listen along in the car. I bought my copies at Seagull Books in Salt Lake City on a visit, and it's also available at Deseret Books.
